How online roulette is played
In an online roulette game, a croupier spins a wheel in one direction and then spins a ball in the opposite direction around the rim of the wheel. The ball drops onto the wheel and eventually lands in one of the coloured and numbered pockets: 37 on a European wheel (0 to 36) or 38 on an American wheel, which adds a double zero.
Players have a variety of betting options. Inside bets select the exact number of the pocket the ball will land in, or a small range of pockets based on their proximity on the layout. Outside bets cover larger positional groupings of pockets, the pocket colour, or whether the winning number is odd or even. The payout odds for each type of bet are based on its probability.
Table limits and chips
The roulette table usually imposes minimum and maximum bets, and these rules usually apply separately to all of a player's inside bets and outside bets for each spin. For inside bets, some casinos use separate roulette chips of various colours to distinguish players at the table. Players can continue to place bets as the ball spins around the wheel until the dealer announces no more bets, or rien ne va plus.
How a spin settles
When the winning number and colour are determined, the dealer places a marker, known as a dolly, on that number on the table layout. While the dolly is on the table no player may place, collect or remove bets. The dealer sweeps away all losing bets by hand or rake and works out the payouts to the remaining inside and outside winning bets. When the payouts are done the marker is removed, players collect their winnings and make new bets, and the winning chips remain on the board.
