Teen Patti is very popular amongst South Asian people and gives millions of players an opportunity to enjoy a gambling game. It is played between groups of 3 to 6 people with a single deck, each player receiving three cards. Hands rank from trail (three of a kind) down through pure sequence, sequence, colour and pair to high card. Players bet in turn, seen or blind, and the hand either ends when only one player remains or at a show between the last two.

An ante is a forced bet in which each player places an equal amount of money or chips into the pot before the deal begins. Often this is a single unit, the smallest value in play, or some other small amount; a percentage such as half or one quarter of the minimum bet is also common. Loose and tight in Teen Patti refer to a player's general tendency to play hands beyond the first round or to fold them quickly. There is no accepted threshold as a ratio of hands played, but a tight player will often fold weaker hands while a loose player bets on more of them and takes more hands to the show. A game engine has to handle both styles: fast folds and long multi-way pots.
